Work + Flow
Where do you feel most engaged?
I feel most engaged in the creative section of the workflow, particularly in the experimenting stage, coming up with ideas and strategies for my design work, I also enjoy the research portion and documentation of my work and showing how this can connect to sharing my work.
When Do I actually feel like I am designing-
When Im in a creative flow of work, such as drawing or coming up with ideas relevant to the topic, taking this to new extents such as researching thoroughly and connecting this research to my experimental ideas
What pain points do you identify in your workflow-
I find the art working portion of design particularly straining, as I feel a lack of perhaps practice on my part but also difficulty in engaging. To me it feels more of the aftermath of my ideas, instead of placing it all together in a meaningful way. - I find that it becomes repetitive (art working) and confusing - in certain projects such as creating a book like structure.
I also find the time management of work flow particularly difficult, especially with balancing certain works from different modules all at once. - I find I get stuck and it feels inefficient
Part 2 - Research tools
What tools, techniques or strategies did you find in your research -
I found that getting into a habit of creating lists of priorities helps me to keep a clear mind of what tasks take importance over others in order to balance out work in different modules. I also found that reorganising my folders and how I arrange my work into a more articulate system allows me to get into a flow state more easily.
Tools such as Eagle - could allow me to organise my research skills better - allowing me to find certain websites/photos easier - tracing back what I would have potentially lost in the workflow
Are.na helping me reorganise my files even more thoroughly - keeping consistent spacing between modules - and a deeper level of organisation through everything being more accessible in one work space
How these could be integrated through your practice -
Reducing friction - time management skills - allowing myself a sufficient amount of time to complete tasks for a module/deadline - perhaps by using simply a calendar or written down list- supporting creativity through taking away the more strenuous parts of the design practice
Part 3 - Question
I think that the introduction of new tools specifically in AI - could be potentially very harming for a role as a designer, for me I belief that AI is taking away the real passion and thoughtful role that goes into being a designer, and how it is particularly destructive for not only the environment but also the psychological advancement of our thought process as humans - taking away from using our own collection of knowledge through thorough research and instead creating unsupported research.
I think that designers should in full be able to keep the design process the same, however with the introduction of AI this is not simply manageable. so Alternitevly, designers should still be at the forefront of any design work, des
I believe that the use of AI is very harmful, however by looking at the current state of the design industry it is something that I must learn to work alongside in order to stay an important and updated part of the industry. However, personally I think that designers should be always at the forefront of design, with as little of the process being automated by AI as possible.
I see the role of designers shrinking, with the current use of AI simply just replacing the jobs available particularly to junior graphic design roles. However, due to the use of AI in programs such as after effects, with rotoscoping and the advancements of certain creative pathways in industries in should not be entirely dismissed - I think that the role of design may simply change in shape and perhaps become even wider in order to balance out the role of automated technologies. I think that the use of more manual processes should still be widely valued and placed above the role of AI.
Other technology uses - I really enjoy experimenting with using photoshop to animate - learning how to use a drawing board to create more expressive and fun designs - adding in research behind my ideas and potentially using this as an experiment in creating title sequences for old/new films.
