After learning about new and emerging technologies, I believe the project that would've benefitted the most would have been the "You Are Here" project. My goal for this project was to create a social space that was informative, welcoming, and stimulated conversations, allowing students to meet and connect with new people - all whilst having a place to go for guidance and information about the university itself. Having physical objects, that people could interact with, would bring people together and create a more social atmosphere. Here are some ways I would've improved this project with what I have learned;
Augmented Reality:
During my process, I created physical blocks which I photographed and photoshopped into my chosen space; this was to get a better visualization of how my piece would look when completed. This was not only a tedious process but also not as informative as I hoped. I believe the use of AR would have improved this process significantly for multiple reasons. Firstly, I would have been able to focus and improve on the scale of my designs better, due to the scale of the boxes being easier to comprehend as you would have a visual representation of a person-to-object ratio. Secondly, I would be able to play around with the spacing of the boxes in my chosen area and how to make it as interactive as possible. Lastly, being able to have my designs at hand and transferrable would've meant I could've seen how my work looked in different locations and decided on which one fit best for what I was trying to achieve.
Projection-Mapping:
On reflection, I would've improved my design by incorporating projection mapping to make my design more interactive and spark more interest; creating mini-games and pop-up information that would be displayed in my designs. This would have made the experience more immersive for the audience and therefore would've made it more successful in welcoming students to the Leeds Arts building.
Overall, I believe that the inclusion of new and emerging technologies in this project would've opened up multiple different avenues and ways to interact with audiences, therefore being less restrictive and allowing for more freedom during the creative process.
