As a designer, I am very interested in custom typography and experimental type. As we went through the emerging technologies seminar, I really liked the motion type section and how the movement added to the letters gave them personality.
Idea 1:
Upon looking further into the motion type exhibition, I noticed that they had projected some of the characters on the wall, allowing them to move at a larger scale. I thought this was really nice and interactive, and this stemmed the idea that I would have for making my 5.1 Atmospheres zine, a digital experience.
My idea is that along with the zine, the reader would be surrounded by white walls. (i promise this won't make them go crazy) As the reader flicks through the zine, elements of the page will be projected up on the walls such as the green blocks and bold type. Elements from the text would also be projected such as the sun. This will make for an interactive experience that lets the reader almost "feel" the atmosphere of the publication.
A "Wonderful range of noises: conversations nearby, footsteps on the square, on stone, birds, a gentle murmuring from the crowd, no cars, no engine sounds, occasional noises from a building site." would also play as the reader is going through the zine, in order to make it more immersive.
In terms of how it would work, I would set up a multi camera Ai system that would scan the room and recognise what page the reader is on, and then according to that page, the elements would be projected onto the walls, ceiling and floor of the room.
Idea 2:
After the seminar, whilst we experimented with Adobe Aero, I realised how easy it was to build an environment / atmosphere in AR.
I looked a bit more at hyperspace AR (by Universal Everything) and had a more experimental idea for this project would be to completely scrap the zine, and instead build out the pages in AR. The reader would enter a large room, and would be able to use their phone to travel around the room in AR, reading the zine but also seeing it in three dimensional way, contrary to the 2D projections of the first idea.
I think this would work very well to immerse the reader/viewer into the text, and really push them to interpritate the text in their own way. Sounds would still play through speakers to add that additional immersion, but the reader would be able to experience the design and story in a very different way.
