AI altered version of 'Ink Cap'

The first image in this post showcases an original painting I created using a mix of acrylic paint, matte sealant, and glossy sealant. This combination gives the piece a unique three-dimensional effect. But what if a painting could move? That’s what I set out to explore using AI.

I used Runway to transform my static artwork into a dynamic video. After uploading a clear image of my painting, I provided a simple prompt: “Make the mushroom come closer and make the black ink drip.” I adjusted the video length and settings to my liking, then let the AI do its thing. Within minutes, my still painting evolved into an animated clip—no complex video editing required.

This experiment opened my eyes to the potential of AI in art and design. Instead of seeing AI as a threat to traditional craftsmanship, I realized it can be a powerful tool. It doesn’t replace artistic skills—it enhances them, streamlining processes, expanding creative possibilities, and generating ideas I might not have considered otherwise.

I am delighted with my first attempt, I love how you can still see the texture of the canvas and each individual brushstroke throughout the video, even as the mushroom and leaves move around the frame.

For my next experiment, I want to push the boundaries further. I’m considering combining multiple paintings into a longer, more intricate animation, transitioning between several images in a seamless manner. Giving an impression of one long continuous image. Another way I could explore combining traditional art and AI is by prompting the software to expand a small piece into something larger while maintaining my personal art style.

As a graphic design student navigating an ever-evolving industry, this experience reinforced an important lesson: embracing technology doesn’t mean abandoning tradition. Instead, the two can work together, opening up exciting new creative opportunities.
