Brief

Type Activation

'Take your type specimen or poster from the last module. Move it to screen and investigate how the type’s character changes or expands in a digital environment. What does screen technology (motion, variable axes, interaction, responsiveness) reveal about the typeface that paper couldn’t?'

Project overview

The poster I made in 5.1 includes words which relate or have the same feel as my chosen typeface 'Acma'. The typeface is has various weights which helps create contrast between the words. This poster could be for a potential high end hotel, even if they didn't want to use same words or sentences I used, as it is very simple and clean looking. Also, it would go well on a magazine or bus stop. The brief and outcome I chose combine well together as my poster is flat, on paper, therefore making this animated and able to move interests me. It makes the poster come alive which I thought I'd never see.

Outcome

Animation

'A pre-rendered, time-based piece that uses motion to communicate. This could be vector animation, cell animation, generative animation, projection-mapped content, or motion graphics. The sequence demonstrates considered use of timing, transition, and visual rhythm.'

Process

I would like to animate this poster to help show the personality of the type face.

Firstly, I would transfer this poster which I created in indesign over to after effects so I could animate it. Using after effects would be better for me as I can use my skills from workshops. My aim would be to make the text move, either sliding in or sliding out of the page. Even flipping the words upside down repeatedly can create an intriguing video. Perhaps slowly fading in the word 'Opulent' could help show the style of the typeface as it's quite delicate.

Visual evidence

To prepare myself for creating my preferred outcome, I would create sketches of where id want the text to move to or what type of layouts i'd want throughout to create contrast. I would do different types of this animation, testing out different sizes of the text and spacing. This would help me vision my ideas before choosing my final outcome.

Technical requirements

I would need to expand my knowledge on the use of after effects and understand it more clearly so I can easily put my sketches onto the screen. I would have to research into animated videos created for high end hotels or magazines to see what style I would need to have. This would also tell me the potential speed on the animation, as if it's too quick, it might not suit the style of the hotel. I need to keep this soft, delicate feel of my type throughout.

Process documentation

Throughout my process, to keep track of what I'm doing, I would screenshot/ screen record, write down or sketch what I've been doing. Including all my failures of what didn't work well, as well as the positives which I didn't end up using. This shows a clear understanding of the animation process and informs my potential client/ audience what I did every step of the way. I would include the range of videos I created, testing out different layouts of my text and sizing etc. Perhaps even the colourings of my videos, this shows the amount of ideas I had and then the final outcome.
