Exploring Emerging Technologies: Puma AI Creator

The sports brand Puma have launched a competition to design Manchester City FC’s next kit with the use of their AI Creator. One of the fan designs created will win and become the club’s 26/27 third kit.

The instructions given before starting your creation using the AI is:

  • Writing a prompt is simple: imagine your dream Man City kit, describe it in your own words, and let PUMA AI CREATOR bring it to life.
  • There is a learning curve to AI generation. For best results, make sure to define your subject and describe any additional features.
  • Including directions like “repeating pattern” will help PUMA AI CREATOR produce a kit closer to what you had in mind.
  • PUMA AI Creator will process your prompt and return up to four designs to choose from. Each will offer a unique interpretation of your prompt.
  • After selecting your design, you can fine tune your kit with a variety of customisation tools. Ready to create something special?

Which then takes you to the page where you enter your prompt to start creating:

Prompt Box:

I gave it the prompt of “manchester bee repeating honeycomb pattern”.

You then select the design style for your kit which I decided to go with ‘Zen Gridlines’.

Design Style Selection:

For the third step you have to select four colours to make up your kit design and I decided to go with two shades of blue and two shades of yellow as these colours would contrast each other.

Colour Selection:

Here is how my design came out based on the design prompts I had given as well as  design and colour choices I had made.

First Design:

From here you can adjust the outcome of your design with sliders for size and placement of the design that the AI has created for your kit to adjust it to how you see works best for the outcome.

Customisation Sliders:

Once I had played around with the sliders for my outcome here is how the kit design was looking:

Second Version Design:

From here you can customise the kit for the collar, trim colours, badge & patterns and the player for names and numbers to push your design even further.

Customisation Options:

Once I had played around with the different options to push my customised design further her is the outcome of my AI generated kit design:

Final Outcome Image:

I think that the use of AI here is really good as it can quickly fire out loads of different variations of kit designs, cutting out hours that could be spent physically designing it. The feature that stands out to me is that once you create the first version of the design you can adjust pattern sizing and placement to how you want it, this is really helpful in quickly altering the design your prompt has created. I think that this is a really good use of an emerging technology as it enables users that would not have been able to create a mocked up kit design of this high quality before the ability to do it over and over again even just for fun.
