Exploring Emerging Technologies: Adobe Neo

Adobe Project Neo is a new application within the Adobe suite that is currently in Beta. It is included in the Adobe suite that we are supplied with and is available for use to create 3D artwork. It uses a similar process to that of Aero that we had used in the studio prior to me coming across this application in order to create 3D art but isn't targeted towards Augmented Reality applications.

When you open up Neo it offers you loads of different pre-made designs that you can alter and mess around with to create a new version based on your adjustments which also allows you to learn the software. You can also open up a new file of your own to create whatever 3D art you wish to design. I decided to open up a new file and begin creating a 3D coffee mug, I used the Cylinder and Torus tools in order to create the coffee cup:

Base Shape:
Adding A Handle:

Adding Torus Shape:

From here I changed the colour of the shapes in order to show the difference between the inside of the cup and the coffee and the actual mug itself, this really adds depth to the design and started to make it come to life.

Adding Colour:

I then started to think about how this item would actually look like in real life so I decided to add a surface for the mug to sit on rather than it just floating in the air. With the rectangle tool I made a worktop like surface and added a leg of the table in the foreground of the design to make it look more realistic. Once I had created the surface Neo automatically added the shadow from the mug to show onto the surface I had implemented. Here is how my 3D mug sitting on a table came out:

Final Outcome:

I really like how this work came out as NEO offers very quick creation of 3D art for multiple variations with how quick designs can be changed and altered based on either preference or client feedback. This could come in really useful when presenting options to a client as you can make changes on a base design to show different outcomes available. The software itself is quite basic but this makes it much easier and quicker to use over other options like Cinema 4D that can create way more in depth 3D art, however the processes with softwares like that take much longer. This software is still only in Beta but I think that it will definitely progress much further and become more and more frequently used to create work for clients and companies.
