5.2 Process Document

5.2.1 – Initiation

For the first project of 5.2, we were tasked to create a campaign that raises awareness about neurodiversity in public spaces. With the premise being that neurodivergent people often face challenges that may seem invisible to others. This campaign should aim to make these challenges visible. I worked in a pair to come up with the idea of a map that made navigating public spaces easier and more appealing, with typical maps maybe being too confusing or plain. We used keynote for a quick presentation slide as well as a pencil diagram of what you might see.

As shown below.

Here is a reflection from that task.

5.2.2 – Innovation

5.2.2 tasked us to look back and pay attention to what may have caught our eye over our social media or out and about. The idea was to think about what stood out without delving too far into why, and to think about who, what, how and go down a rabbit hole to find out as much as we can about what interested us. Here is the link to what I found.

The follow-on task was to then look back on a project we had previously completed and reflect on how one or more of the technologies from the morning talk could have been integrated into the process. Here is the link to what I found.

Follow on task for week 2 I chose to revisit my moving image task as I felt most interested in the animation side of things from the morning talk. I was introduced to some cool new softwares and websites that caught my attention. So it made the most sense for

5.2.3 - Implementation

This week helped me to reflect on my personal experience and methods when it comes to graphic design. It was a good way to write down strengths and weaknesses and see for myself.

5.2.3 Reflection on practice, research tools and questioning what the changes mean: Part 1 - Reflection What parts of your practice make you feel most engaged and creative? * When I start to get an idea together, once I have brainstormed my main points and start to see something

5.2.4 – Automation

This week was enjoyable as we were shown a few websites for free and easy to use ways of creating quick designs. Each with different functions and easy customization to use your own ideas for quick execution. Here are some of the outcomes that I ended up with while quickly playing about with them. This was eye opening as it showed me that access to play and create isn’t as limited as I thought.

5.2.5 - Production

This week was fun to look at possible outcomes for previous projects, it was good to look at it with a fresher pair of eyes and see what I can add to this and maybe relate this technique to other previous projects of mine.

5.2.5 Production Brief: 1. Depth of Motion - Return to your moving image project from last year. Keep the subject and concept, but increase the complexity of your approach. Use the motion graphics, animation, or projection techniques from this module to add depth, sophistication, or technical ambition to

5.2.6 – Distribution

The final week opened my eyes up to the personal desire to start to establish a professional and public platform and portfolio that showcases my work, whether that’s polished designs for commercial use, or quick designs and mock-ups that form some sort of archive for my work. Something like this would not only help others understand my style but for myself to figure out my exact style and being able to look at all my work in one place. I have never thought about doing this yet or what platform I would use to showcase, but it is something that I feel I need to start considering and start to think about a professional stance on graphic design or at least a general direction.

I would also like to build my skills in After Effects and start to look at adding movement to my designs.

5.2 - Reflection

This module has made me realise the prominence of new and emerging technology in all areas of design. I already knew its current place in the everyday tech and software I use but this has shown me how wide the range really is and the limitless opportunities with it. This is encouraging and also shows the ways it can help designers to execute their ideas and can allow for all sorts of new and unique areas for design. I can also see the negative as now I am aware of this, it can be overwhelming to feel I need to learn all of this new stuff and be skilled at all of it, or the fear of falling behind in the fast emerging new stuff. It can also take away from the hours and dedication some people may put into authentically creating/coding/producing something when there is a new free website that does very similar without much effort.

I have explored tools like Jitter, Munken, p5studio, animalswithanimals recently. I liked it as it showed the importance of actually having a good idea before you go into more advanced or technical tools like the adobe apps. I would find that I would open up an app like this and expect myself to come up with something but then struggle as I didnt have a full idea and so producing something that wasn't finished in my head was harder with software I didnt know fully how to use. So these easier websites allowed to simply position and edit and animate things that I could see how they worked and actually looked in front of me.

I like how the easier and possible AI influenced stuff emerging is useful for rough ideas and a quick solution that may aid a project, but I don't like using them for something more polished or professional as I feel it takes away from the soul of the work and the authenticity, it is automatically less impressive and doesn't hold much depth or emotion.

In the future I will look to engage with emerging technology and at least try it out so I can understand it and the more I try the more that may help me and give me more knowledge and fuel when it comes to designing. I haven't been that tapped in to all this stuff and this module has helped but there is still a long way to go.
