5.2.5 project

Project overview -

I am proposing an animation that takes my type specimen project further, exploring how typefaces can shapeshift with different tools, and I will try to use the childlike quality of the type to animate a fun, experimental design. My idea is to take the pages of the type specimen to turn into scanned drawings of the typography or create a fun interactive animation for young children learning to read.

Visual evidence

Taking my previous work in 5.1 that focused on showing the personality of the typeface in a specimen document towards a more interactive idea for children to read.

I thought visually it would be more interesting to explore vivid colour pallets that engage children but also coincided with the childlike sense of wonder in the story.

Sketches of ideas:

considering idea of illustrating text that appears alongside the slow reveal of text - I want it to look like someone is drawing as it is interacted with - eg a child on an iPad can click and each time it reveals a new aspect of the design
experimenting with use of texture and idea placement on sketches

My idea was to take my old type specimen and create an interactive animation - I used after effects to experiment with how to bring this to life - I thought this would give me the precision of the exact typeface but also give me enough freedom to create a complex animation

Technical Requrements

I would need to learn more on adobe after effects for the different animation techniques to grasp the concept further. I would also look into making the typeface into a more written looking aesthetic to create a nostalgic feel to it.

Necessary research - looking into old tv shows for children/illustrated childrens books for inspiration and to find what works and what doesn't. My main idea was to create a stylistic and fun animation such as Charlie and Lola - it uses the main typeface in a playful way and includes character design but in particular the illustrations illuminate the typeface.

I then researched into which colours would be most engaging for children learning to read and to my intended audience - from research the earliest age is around 5 years old and this led me to pastel colour pallets

therefore decided to stick which my original pastel idea that links back to further engaging children for reading

The idea is to make reading fun through visual learning - a fun animation with interactive typography that also incorporates different illustrations for a fun environment.
