4.4 Exploring the use of projections

4.4 Exploring the use of projections

How and why I would incorporate projection within a past project.

For the module 4.4 one of the briefs was to brand/ rebrand a product or service in our given area. For this I decided to brand a street creating a visual identity through posters, street signs and number plaques. The whole identity was built around the unique and interesting doors of the buildings and was designed to be interactive whilst walking down the street.

process of designing the patterns and posters

I initially had an idea at the beginning of the project to project patterns on the street floor at dark to create an interesting feature that would draw people in as well as lighting up the street with colourful and interesting patterns. This idea was abandoned quickly because of my lack of knowledge around the technology as well as focusing on other elements of the project. Working on 5.2 I researched and looked at how projection works as well as some projects that involve projecting onto streets and buildings. So I revisited this project looking at how I would incorporate projection now and what I could have done.

final posters for project

This was a public installation in Montreal projecting onto buildings around the city to inform the residents and tourists about the city's history.

Looking at this project the videos that are projected onto the ground are the elements that inspire me the most and technique I would incorporate into the 4.4 project with the patterns I created appearing on the floor. There could be a mixture of still images and moving images; so editing the patterns and images to have moving elements. Obviously I couldn't actually create the projections at the location but I could have mocked up how it would look and use the projector in the studio to show how the images and videos would project.

Another project I looked at that was really interesting is the Guerrilla Projections. Described as projection bombing it is the act of projecting images or videos onto buildings without their permission. It can be used for advertising and marketing campaigns or more fittingly for protests and political stunts as it can target areas and buildings having broad visibility and influence. It's also stated that this is legal, bar from a few exemptions.
