Amplify the Overlooked
The world is full of details that go unnoticed, but design can bring them into focus. This project invites you to identify something small, hidden, or overlooked—a physical detail, a system, or an everyday behaviour—and amplify its presence. Your goal is to celebrate or draw attention to something that is usually ignored, helping your audience see it in a new way
Customised Print Materials
Printed designs tailored to specific individuals or contexts, offering a sense of personalisation and connection. Personalisation can transform a message, making it feel more relevant and engaging to its audience. The focus should be on creating variations that reflect different contexts, environments, or individual preferences, while maintaining the integrity of the overall design. Example: A set of posters that adapt messaging based on audience demographics.
I have chosen the first brief as I like the idea of bringing things into focus which usually go unnoticed, for example I could get normal objects and then scale them to scales which are unnatural.
I plan on doing this with the software MidJourney which is an AI-powered tool that generates high-quality images based on textual descriptions provided by the user. It uses machine learning algorithms to interpret the input text and create visual representations, offering a wide range of artistic styles and outputs. Users can generate images for creative projects, visual inspiration, or design purposes by providing specific prompts or concepts. It's popular among artists, designers, and creatives for its ability to quickly turn ideas into compelling visuals, here are some examples I was thinking of.
One concept I’m exploring with MidJourney involves creating illustrations of oversized, cartoon-like objects for poster designs. By pairing each object with a catchy slogan or playful pun, I can infuse them with personality. Setting these items in scenic locations around the world will further enhance their impact, offering both visual interest and global recognition.
MidJourney makes it easy to explore creative possibilities by generating multiple versions of an image with each prompt. These variations allow me to see subtle differences in colour, composition, and style. I can then refine or tweak my favourite version, making small adjustments until it aligns perfectly with my vision. This feature streamlines experimentation, giving designers the flexibility to explore ideas quickly and adjust details as needed. MidJourney's iterative approach enhances creativity while maintaining control over the final design.
Final Outcomes
My posters focus on everyday objects (a rubber duck, water bottle and a pencil) that are often taken for granted or overlooked in daily life. By enlarging them and placing them in unexpected, majestic environments like the Rockies with the water bottle, I am creating a playful contrast that forces the audience to reconsider the presence and significance of these objects. The scale shift not only amplifies their physical form but also emphasizes their role in our routines, drawing attention to something normally mundane and making it impossible to ignore.
Each poster reflects a different environmental context, which connects to the idea of customized print materials. By setting the objects to specific, iconic locations, I highlight how context can shape the perception of something otherwise ordinary. This also personalizes the message—depending on the audience’s familiarity with these environments, they may experience different associations or interpretations. For example, someone familiar with Alaska might interpret the rubber duck as humorous or nostalgic, while the large water bottle in the Rockies could evoke thoughts of adventure and hydration in nature.
This approach links both aspects of the brief, as I am amplifying overlooked details (small objects) in an engaging and humorous way, while also adapting the designs to different environments, making them feel contextually relevant and engaging.
